KARINA SAT AT the kitchen table trying to concentrate on Daniel’s business cards instead of wondering if he was avoiding her. He’d been back from visiting his parents in Campbell River for two days now and she’d hardly seen or spoken to him. Of course, that could also be because she was avoiding him.

She’d been wrong to interfere, she could see that now. Well, from now on she’d butt out. Daniel was perfectly capable of sorting out his own problems. First he had to acknowledge them, but that wasn’t her responsibility, either.

She was so absorbed in her thoughts she didn’t notice he’d entered the room until he sat down at the table opposite her and the faint, woodsy scent of his aftershave made her look up.

“Hi,” she said, and wondered what was coming.

“I owe you an apology,” he began stiffly. “I ruined your dinner party.”

“It’s not me you should be apologizing to.”

Daniel’s expression hardened. “I’ll be damned if I’ll apologize to Brian.”

Karina put down the pen she’d been using and chose another from her set, one with a finer point. “You just apologized to me for a far less serious reason.”

She began to rule a narrow border around Daniel’s company name, Bowen’s Fine Furniture. “Are you going to feud for another ten years?”

Daniel tossed down the spoon he’d been playing with. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

She shrugged as though she didn’t care, but she was disappointed in him. “It’s your life. I’m sorry I interfered. It won’t happen again.”

“Look, just because I won’t apologize doesn’t mean I’m giving up on Brian. I’m going to drop in on him after he gets home from work. Maybe without an audience, he and I can cut through the BS and work out our differences.”

There was hope for him yet, Karina thought. She chose a favorite shade of rich, red-brown for the border on his card. “I’m sure you can.”

His brow cleared. “I need to ask you a favor.”

She lifted her head, giving him her full attention. “What can I do?”

“Look after Natalie for a few hours. I’d rather not take her to Brian’s with me.”

“No problem. I’ll take her grocery shopping, then we’ll make dinner. It’ll be fun.”

“She’s not used to eating late,” he said, the frown reappearing. “Six o’clock is her usual dinnertime. She should be in bed by seven-thirty. No junk food or she’ll be bouncing off the walls.”

Karina lay down her pen and stretched her cramped fingers. “Relax. I can handle it.” She spun the card around to show him what she’d done. “What do you think?”

He gazed at it a moment, then glanced at her. “It’s good. I like it.” He pulled it closer and studied it further. “I really like it. How did you know what a woolshed looks like?”

“You can find almost anything on the Internet.”

“Is that so? Anyway, getting back to Natalie—she’s meeting her teacher tomorrow. I want her to be well rested.”

Karina smiled indulgently. Daniel was behaving like a typical nervous parent overprotecting his offspring.
